This unit replaced a 14" Sony analogue CRT of 1990 vintage and separate Goodmans DB2 set-top digital tuner. So the contrast was startling to me.
The finish, performance and value-for-money of the set is very good - in real money terms i.e. adjusting for inflation, the cost of the set is roughly equivalent to what I spent on its predecssor in 1990.
I was also impressed by the sound which, even in simple stereo mode, seems to reveal detail and 3-D effect that wasn't available on its predecessor.
Also, the third party supplier didn't hang around delivering the kit
The set is currently being used as the main household set to view Terrestial Freeview Digital TV.
It is being run from an indoor 16 element directional aerial mounted in the loft roof space with a signal amplifier attached to the aerial mast. This provides a very good full-strength signal reception on Freeview in my part of North-West London, where the signal from the South London based transmitters, 12 miles away, has historically been poor due to various factors. In fact, the sensitivity of the tuner on this unit was so much greater than the separate digital box it replaced that I was able to dispense with a secondary set-top TV signal amplifer that I had been using with the 14" set.
The digital tuner electronics seems to deal well with externally generated signal interference, experiencing only very occasional minor picture pixellation - the predecessor DB2 box seemed to be very sensitive to this, as it was to mains power spikes and noise.
That said, this set is not the latest technology, its only only HD ready (720P not 1020i), Bravia 2 Picture engine hardware and software (As against the current Bravia 3), although, I suspect that I would be hard-pushed to spot the difference in the present viewing environment. Also, it does not support direct network connection (Only of relevance if you want to create a multimedia centre, although this can be done partially by connecting the D SUB connectot to a separate laptop/desktop). But if you want leading-edge, then you'll pay at least £300-400 more.
Given the value of this purchase I have taken the precaution of fitting a high frequency signal filter (Balun) in the aerial co-axial lead to suppress interference, and also purchased a new mains power supply conditioning unit (filter and spike suppressor and choke) to protect the internal electronics of the set from damage.
I have been using the set for a month now and the only problem that I've experienced occurs on the analogue signal side, where the picture on all channels has developed a mild white-coloured horizontal line which scans vertically up and down the screen at slow speed. I believe owners of earlier models have experienced this. I suspect that this is mains power supply generated interference. As yet, I haven't been able to isolate the source. Anyway, it doesn't seem to effect anything else and as I never use the analogue TV signal tuner I'm not worried.
Some owners of earlier models reported problems with the set switcjing itself-off uncommanded and then being unable to switch it back on. I have not experienced this problem. I've left the set in stand-by (1 watt power consumption) and switch it on using the remote. The set does have a facility wherby it switches itself off if nobody has been watching it for a set period of time - I think it uses the same technology that the infra-red light sensing door lights employ. May be that behaviour was misinterpreted by other owners !
I would say, make sure that you register to ensure that you get the warranty cover.
Overall, I'm throughly satisfied with the set. Hopefully, it will last as long as its predecessor.

When I bought the 26S5500 TV, the LCD2302 wall bracket was recommended to fit this TV, well it doesn't. Part of the backing panel that fixes to the back of the TV obscures the TV Ariel socket. I didnt have time to send it back and reorder another one and got round it OK. I note now this wall bracket is nowhere to be seen on Amazon.

unfortunately the product is faulty. it switches itself on without warning and although in most cases it switches itself off again before picture and sound arrive on several occasions it has remained swiched on. i have written to the supplier about this problem by email through amazon but have so far received no reply.

I bought this TV a week ago after living with an old Sony Trinitron CRT and overall very pleased with it. Very easy to use, nice remote, good appearance, simple to set up, excellent picture when viewing DVD's etc. Find picture quality on Digital / Freeview pretty variable but I think this is more to do with the original broadcast than the set itself.

This is the second Sony flat screen tv that I have purchased,and after buying the first and being so impressed was keen to repeat the process with the so-called newer and better model.
The standby function freezes after a few hours,so that you have to unplug the set to seemingly reset the tv.
Another very annoying feature of this tv is that it is very slow to respond to the remote commands,and what can happen is that multiple commands seem to overload the tv which results in the tv 'shutting down'and seemingly re-booting.
This is the last Sony tv that I will buy.
