1 out of 5 stars Bad backlight bleed   March 12, 2010
G. Claxton
After reading many reviews and looking at TV's in store, i decided to order this.
I had read that it was plagued by backlight bleed but thought there must be only a few sets affected. I was wrong. The tv arrived early morning and i had chance to play with all the settings throughout the day.
It wasnt until night time and i sat down to watch a film that i noticed it. Two torchlights beaming down from the top corners of the set. Needless to say, i was annoyed.
It wasnt noticable in daylight scenes but as soon as it reached a dark scene the picture was ruined.
Sending it straight back to Amazon, there is clearly a fault with this set. You might be lucky and get one which hasn't but i wouldnt risk it. There are countless forums dedicated to the problems with the backlight on this set.
Im now going to replace the set with a samsung and see how my luck goes with a different tv.

4 out of 5 stars Does size matter?   March 8, 2010
Mr. Selwyn Roberts (UK)
Having had a Sony KDL32V-2500 for a couple of years in our lounge, I decide to get a larger set for our larger family room , - a converted double garage.
I have always been very impressed with the quality of Sony televisions, particularly our 32V, so decided on a 40 inch set and having looked at demos and read specs setteld for the W series.
It is very acceptable, but does not "blow me away" as the the 32V did. Perhaps, as the screen gets bigger, the resolution diminishes?
We tend to sit closer to the 32V than the 40W, so it may be a litle unfair to judge it on the same parameters.
I still think my choice was the right one.

4 out of 5 stars Good Buy   February 25, 2010

As other reviewers have noted, there are clouding issues, hopefully with time they will 'blow' away. Apart from that no issues with the TV. The picture is great and I am pleasantly surprised by how good the quality of sound is.

4 out of 5 stars Good or Great TV if you are lucky   February 24, 2010

So after using it for over 2 months i think its time for a review. Previously i was using a 27" Philips. But i have been studing the features of LCD tv on the net and in the shops. Be warned that i am a harsh critic and talk most of the bad sides.
Bought in december 09 with firmware 1.600EA

Delivery - Could have been faster than 12 days, but what could one expect from eastern Europe post delivery. Arrived at the post office 2 days earlier then the notification about it. This forced me to use Amazons support and i got to say it was helpful. Within 30 minutes a mail with a reasonable answer came back. So overall good.

Package - Beside from the normal stuff there was a UK only warranty page and some EU warranty "brochure". The brochure has like 1 sentence in 50 languages and no information at all. So i have no idea if i have a warranty. Registered the Bravia tv in dec09 but i only got spam from Sony. Could anyone specify if one does get warranty outside UK!? Package contains only UK powercord(3pins) and no other useful cables. Package = dissapointing.

Design - Warning! Personal opinion only. A bit too bulky... could have some more round edges. It looks stylish, but it just belongs more into a fancy restaurant than a modern "young" room. Its border is reflecting black... like every tv must be, because any other colour would distract. Scart and vga are on the back, what may cause problems when wallmounting. But i would never buy anything because of just a good design so ill give it a good. TV is economical with only using ~140W.

Sound - Like most LCD Tvs. Misses the extra oomph and basses. The sound is nice and clear. The technology behind the speakers is good. The S-force surrond and other features can make a hearable difference. There seem to be 4 audio outputs but as i understand it doesnt support 5.1 output. HDMI also supports 2.1 only. But i am no audio expert so dont take my word. Audio is enough for use with digital SD tv. As i use mostly other audio sources i am not going to rate it.

Freeview - What can i say, found our meager 5 channels within minutes and reception is good. With each channel change the the channelname, title, duration, current date&time is shown ~3 sec. EPG shows usually ~3 hours. Week view with +/- 1 day button. Title length depends on running time = often too much shortened title. Other than viewing the EPG could be a too difficult task for not-so-experienced people. Does not fully support HD freeview channels, please correct me if i am wrong. Has CAM card slot. Channels change usually whitin 2 seconds.

Functionality and ease of use - Id say that the GUI is not very easy to use. Most useful setting are hidden in the depth of the interface and cant be found just on the remote. Eg. there is no real picture and audio setting presets just on a remote button. Most useful settings/functions can be accessed with the options button tho. Some of the scene modes seem to be just set to default settings and there are 4 available to select in freeview. Completly useless seem to me the LAN connection and USB. LAN(applicast) should display some RSS feeds with widgets on half the screen, but it seems to be restricted with what sony is offering. And setting up a server for streaming media from PC seems too complicated for most users. USB can view only few file formats and did not work with my 16gb cruzer. Doesnt seem to be supporting USB hdd-s. Other equipment like sattelite, dvd,pc was easy to connect and there are 9 inputs to select+tv. Each inputs picture/sound settings must be individually configured.
Overall average+.

Picture - Ah the thing that makes a TV. In short everything is good but 1 thing. Default settings are nogood, but after configuring... Colours very good, contrast very good(for lcd), sd scaling very good, movement is fluid and so on. At daylight the black frame is very hard to seperate from a black screen. At the shops the next best contrast costed 500 more. Lot of the other models produced noise when upscaling Sd, but here it is only minor. Colours are good, but might be more "bright" on some Philips models. This didnt seem to be more natural to me tho. FullHD movies look very good, but from 4m distance there is no real difference to see between good SD and FullHD. Input lag is very noticable in normal modes, in game mode it is not, at least for me.

Now the bad part. CLOUDING! Very present in top left corner and right middle and annoying in black scenes when watching in darkness. Some are saying it doesnt exist or dissappears over time, but 2+ months didnt change anyhting. So my conclusion would be it is Sonys(or whoever makes them) fault on some panels and it is just a gamble, if you get an ok model.

Conclusion - An overall good TV, that has a very good picture but that comes with a risk of getting a faulty panel. It is advisable to have some technical skills with this TV, at least for the setup. In my opinion there is a lot to improve on this TV, but it is the best for its price. Hope that was all.
I would give it a 8,5 , but the backlight problem makes it a 8.0 out of 10.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Value for Money   February 19, 2010

I'm very impressed with the quality, especially at that price. I'm not a technical expert (I like to use the old fashioned sight and sound comparison test), but I spent a while comparing this with the newer version that had 200Hz Motionflow, and I don't think there is any noticeable difference.

This works superbly, the colours are great (and you can change the settings easily to suit the type of programme you are watching or game you are playing) and the detail when watching football matches is a huge improvement on my old TV.

Also, I love the fact that when I turn the PS3 on, it automatically changes channels. And then back to Sky HD. Its those little things that do it for me.

Not sure what to make of Applicast. I think its a gimmick and would rather just switch on the PS3 (which, incidentally, can be controlled at a basic level by the TV's remote control!).

This should last a few years until 3D telly takes over the world!
