5 out of 5 stars A life changing experience   February 15, 2010

I've owned this TV for about a month now and I have to say that it's completely changed our lives in terms of home AV. Admittedly it was bound to be a major improvement to our 15 year old portable CRT but still...

I bought this alongside the Panasonic BD60EB Blu-ray Disc Player and the first thing to say is that they both worked on a basic level immediately out of the box without any set-up problems. The manual is really clear (though I couldn't say the same about the DVD manual) though I've hardly needed it. The main issue is getting all the right leads in all the right places for connection to PVR, VCR, amplifier, aerial, etc but none of this is a big problem assuming you're reasonably technical. If you do run into issues I've found the guys at Panasonic to be hugely knowledgeable and helpful with a very personal service that is a million miles from the usual call-centre nightmare..

I'm really pleased I opted for the Panasonic DVD player, since the compatibility is great through VieraLink, with the ability to integrate menu functions and use the same remote etc. Even more impressive is the fact that my 12 year old Panasonic VCR is also fully compatible through Q-link and again can share the same remote. The TV picks up both devices (and my Talk Talk PVR) without any problems, automatically adjusting aspect ratios etc, and in the case of the DVD and VCR even switching them off automatically when the TV is switched off.

As for the TV itself, it looks pretty good (as far as any of them do) and is noticeably slimmer than the other models in the Panasonic range. I hadn't known quite what to expect in terms of standard TV and have been delighted by the way it picks up high quality FreeView digital TV directly through the aerial without any kind of subscription, with lots of channels and a really high quality programme guide. If we wanted to put a satellite dish on the roof it's also able to pick up FreeSat HD TV from the BBC etc, which I guess we might do at some stage but seems a bit like overkill for the time being given the limited availability of content. Analogue TV look pretty shadowy and poor, but with FreeView I can't imagine why we'd ever want to use it.

The TV has basic internet access like YouTube built in, which actually works well and looks pretty good even full screen (though is a bit tedious to search with the remote). Most importantly (and the only reason I went for this top of the range model) is the fact that through the ethernet link to my router and DNLA standard built in, it is able to network directly to our various computers which act as media servers and enabling us to instantly view our photos and videos on the TV. This takes a little work to set up and the supplied TwokyMedia software I've installed on my XP machine isn't the best, but it also works fine on Vista with the standard installation of Windows MediaPlayer. You can't use it to stream music, but can view all standard JPEG image files and DivX video files (the necessary format converters widely available online). The TV can also read the audio visual content on SD cards as well as connecting directly to my Lumix cameras through the remote.

It also works as an amazingly good screen for our laptops, which is mainly useful for viewing HD content on the BBC iPlayer the results of which are astoundingly good. Now all I need is to get a wireless keyboard consul for the laptop and I'll never have to leave the sofa again!

3 out of 5 stars Good but could be better   January 9, 2010

Took the plunge with a new TV so I could access the HD content on Freesat, it is a huge disappointment, switching between standard and HD on the BBC and ITV service I can barely see the difference. iplayer is now available on freesat via the red button and page 5483, works fine on my regular TV connected via Humax PVR but not yet supported by Panasonic software. Connects to Twonky server on NAS but doesn't stream music, will only display photo's in jpg format and will only stream video in Mpeg2 PS format. So promises a lot but is restricted. Connection to you tube is handy, other sites available are of limited interest. But all this may well improve, it just needs software updates.
Remote is well thought out - at last a manufacturer that recognises people of a certain age can't see tiny print on tiny buttons. Sound is a little thin.

I was a little worried about purchasing this product after reading some of the review comments re: sound quality. I have an LG flat screen TV and the sound is woeful - I assume due to lack of space & hence tiny (read tinny!) speakers. I went to the Panasonic shop in Sheffield for a demo and guess what the sound broke up terribly- the salesman made some excuse about it being one that had missed the sound update, not a good demo!
However a friend of mine had purchased one and had no problems and I was impressed by the general quality and features particularly the built in freesat and freeview. So despite my reservations I decided to grab the bull by the horns and purchased one just before christmas. Delivery through Amazon was excellent as usual, setup was very straightforward, picture quality is superb, sound seems fine to me. At the moment it is running freeview until I run a cable from the dish to enable HD on freesat - it is fine.
I have plugged in a LAN cable from the router, this enabled me to watch utube - though searching utube using the remote is a pain and is something that needs addressing. The internet side of the TV (Viera Cast) is VERY limited, I hope that Panasonic develop this, I can't see why for instance BBC iplayer could not be accessed - then it would be really useful.
To sum up an excellent product my only reservation being the usefulness of Viera Cast.
Will it last as long as the TV it replaced? - 25 year old 28" Sony, superb picture no breakdowns - it broke my heart to take it to the tip.
I think not - but I hope it does.
